Polysyndactyly associated with hallux varus in adults

Abstract

Polydactyly is a common congenital deformity of the forefoot, that can be associated to syndactyly. The etiology is unknown, the most accepted theory an inherited trait and positive family history in 30% to 39% of cases, genetic counseling having great importance. Temtamy and McKusick’s classification is widely used that subdivides polydactyly in pre-axial, central and post-axial, the latter being the most common. Hallux varus may also be associated with pre-axial polydactyly, but there are no cases reported in literature of post-axial polydactyly. The surgical procedure for correction of the deformity consists of resection of the accessory toe, and if it is associated to syndactyly, the residual skin is used as a graft. The authors present the case of an 18 year old female patient of with polysindactyly associated with hallux varus who was submitted a to surgical correction.
