Navicular bone comminuted fracture: medial plate fixation. Case report and literature review

Abstract

Navicular bone fractures are uncommon and are associated with long-term morbidity. Little attention has been given to these fractures in the modern literature, and most authors consider surgical treatment to be the best option. The best method of fixation for highly comminuted fractures with articular involvement is unknown. In addition, there is little practical information on how function and alignment can be most effectively achieved. We report a case of type 3 comminuted fracture that was treated with total excision of the navicularbone because of extensive comminution and inability to stabilize with screws. The bone was replaced by a tricortical bone graft from the iliac crest and was fixed with a 3.5-mm reconstruction plate using anteromedial access. After three years, the patient had regained function without pain
