Objective: First metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis is an accepted technique for the treatment of severe conditions of the joint. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the results of a series of patients treated with an oblique lag screw plus a dorsal locking plate with a mínimum of 1-year follow-up. Methods: A retrospective analysis of a group of patients treated at our institution was performed. The sample was composed of 22 MTFH arthrodesis performed between 2009 and 2012, the average age was 62 years and the average follow-up was 23 months (16-35). The clinical analysis was performed with the AOFAS score and preoperative and postoperative radiographic evaluation. Results: The fusion achieved was 96%. The average time of unión was 2.2 months. The postoperative AOFAS score increased by 68% compared to preoperative. There were two superficial infections treated with antibiotics and asymptomatic nonunion. Conclusion: MTFH fusion is a relatively simple procedure with high success rates, that requires a correct indication and careful preoperative planning. We believe that the rigidity and stability provided by the method is vital as as the position of the arthrodesis.
