Evaluation of the results of mild and severe hallux valgus surgical treatment

Abstract

Objective: To show the angle correction of moderate and severe hallux valgus, using the osteotomy technique of the first metatarsal base (MTT) with the addition of autologous bone graft and plate fixation of support beyond the correction of soft tissue distal capsuloplasty “L”. Methods: We evaluated 46 feet in 36 patients aged 20 to 72 years old (average of 55.1 years old) with average follow-up of 15.8 months. They were assessed on pre and postoperative radiographs after six months of evolution by the following parameters: intermetatarsal angle (IMA); MTT first and second angle (IMA I-II); hallux valgus angle (HVA); percentage value of the sesamoids subluxation (% SES), and length of the first metatarsus (1st MTT), pre and postoperative. We evaluated the AOFAS score before and after surgery. Results: There was a correction AIM I - II 20.91° to 8.58° (p=0.0001). The HVA suffered a correction of 32.86° to 13.97° (p=0.0000) deviation and corrected sesamoids of 65.76 to 18.47% (p=0.0000), after surgery. Conclusion: The correction method of moderate and severe hallux valgus with the base osteotomy of the first metatarsal, fixed with plate, proved to be effective with low complication rate and improvement of all angle parameters that were analyzed.
