Abstract

Background: distal tibial fractures are one of the most common sites where plate osteosynthesis is use. In this anatomic region, percutaneous techniques looking for elastic metaphyseal fixation and articular absolute stability with minimal damage to periosteal blood supply and soft tissue envelope are the most spread currently. Method: we present a retrospective review of 23 closed distal tibial fractures without articular damage (AO 43A) or with articular damage (AO 43C1 y 43 C2) treated with minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis. Results: all fractures healed at an average time of 22,3 weeks. 21 of 23 cases shown very good functional outcomes. Only 4 patients developed major postoperative complications that lead to a second complex surgical procedure. Conclusions: plate ostheosynthesis in the treatment of distal tibial fractures using percutaneous technique presents predictable bone healing, very good functional outcomes and low major postoperative complications rate , althought is a tricky method that can´t take place to endomedullary nailing in certain situations.
