Abstract

Objective: Present the technique of totally arthroscopic Broström-Gould on “Inside-Out” variant and preliminary clinical results in patients with chronic ankle instability, undergoing this procedure. Methods: Twelve patients, who had chronic ankle instability refractory to physical therapy for at least 6 months, were operated by this technique. The pre and post surgical status were assessed using the AOFAS questionnaire. Results: Prior to surgery, the mean AOFAS score was 55 (42-62). After the procedure, the mean value was 91 (77-100). The criteria of the questionnaire that showed more improvement were function and pain. We have not experienced any complications of surgical wound or prolonged paresthesia. Conclusions: Based on our preliminary results we believe this is a real option technique for surgical approach for chronic ankle instability in those patients in whom conservative treatment has failed. Prospective randomized clinical trials are needed to compare this technique to open procedures.
